My short musical biography.

I was born in Scotland in 1961 into a family of musicians, and I´m continuing my family tradition. As a child I won several National Burns Poetry and Song awards for excellence performing Robert Burns`s works , this is something I have carried into adulthood.
( see my Scottish Concert )
At 17, I made my first professional solo stage debut. Also performing a version of Mike Oldfields "Tubular Bells" arranged for two guitars, together with my old friend and guitar ´teacher ´ Ian Slater.
At 18 I spent two years in the band ' The Precious Few ', together with Ian backing a certain Miss Margaret Zavaroni - ( yes, Lenas cousin ; I grew up next to Lena in Rothesay, where all the talented Zavaronis live ! ) , also backing tons of singers - this added to my ever-growing stagecraft that I have today.
Then after working my way through Scotland and England, I left London to tour Europe, where I took up residence in central Germany.
While still working the 'acoustic scene', I co-formed ,sang and played Bass in the band ' Southwest Deluxe ', a band that toured constantly and also backed such artists as Nancy Griffith, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Steve Wariner, Hoyt Axton, Kris Kristofferson, and German giants Truckstop.
Then, when I and the band could go no further together, I left to continue as a solo artist.

I have appeared on various Radio and TV shows on both sides of the Atlantic including BBC Radio, Radio Clyde (scotland ), Radio Scotland , NDR Germany, Radio Arc en Ciel ( France) , AFN Europe and The Nashville Network TV station in America.
Over the years I´ve played gigs with such diverse luminaries as: B.B. King, The Jeff Healey Band, The Dubliners, The Furies, Johnny Logan ( Irelands two-time Eurovision winner), Bianca Shomberg, (German Eurovision artist ) ,The Platters, Birelli Lagrene, my old friend `Scatman John` (Larkin) { " I´m a Scatman " } , Mark Gillespie,(lots of live gigs together, with band and as a duo and I´ve sang on 3 of his albums ).
I`ve sang and performed with fantastic Genesis cover band ' Seconds Out ' ,and also with Spocks Beard and Genesis drummer Nick DiVirgillo. I´ve performed at the acclaimed 'Scandinavian Guitar Festival' as the only acoustic artist next to classical virtuoso (and fellow Scot ) David Russell. I´ve performed at Osnabruker Guitar Festival while also demonstrating Guitar and Guitar synthesizers for the Godin guitar company and worked and performed several times at Frankfurts Musik Messe for both Tom Scholtz Rockman and Landola guitars. I was also ( and sometimes still am ) the guitarist and vocalist in the band `Celtic Fusion` - a band where you can hear a fine mix of contempary and modern folk.( contact me for details ).
I´ve featured on several cd's as lead/guest vocalist, guitarist or both ; been called the " human choir " for my ability to add luscious harmonies to others work.
I`ve organised benefit concerts for Tibetan refugees and human rights issues, working together with Tibetan artists Lobsag Sherab and Palden Tawo best known for his soundtrack to the movie `Living Buddha` . I´ve performed and organized benefit concerts for the Homeless ; Irish bomb blast victims in Omagh Ireland ; Earthquake victims in Latin America ; therapy money for a child in a coma ; and orphanages in the Himalayas and Tibet.

I have constantly toured through most of Europe as a solo artist, in clubs and festivals, large and small, and has entertained hundreds of thousands of people over the years.
I have been working together with the keyboarder Robert Mulch and drummer Marcus Leukel in my band ´ Anyway `, playing classic progrock favourites, ie; Genesis , Yes, Gabriel, Pink Floyd, ELP etc..
no mean feat for a trio !

'Classical Guitar Magazines' review:
"Normally we don't review ( solo ) artists such as John, but in this case we must say he is a first rate entertainer".

AFN Europe: Tom Clemenson -
" One of the best one-man acoustic shows I've ever seen "

The Scandinavian Guitar Festival review...
- An evening in the musical company of John Morrell is a distinct pleasure: A journey through the history
of contemporary music, a roller coaster ride along the history of classic rock, folk, funk, fun and farce.
This highly acclaimed acoustic guitarist and vocalist has taken his unique brand of acoustic wizardry
and entertainment throughout Europe to the delight of audiences large and small.
These days John is using guitar synthesisers, right alongside his acoustic /electric sound .
" So don't be surprised if where you once heard a solo 'band ' you now hear an ' orchestra ' ! "
If you have not seen this man perform it is high time you did!
The only guarantee John will put on his show is that "you'll never know what might happen and you'll
leave with a smile on your face " !

My solo gig stage set-up: " I use a Godin MultiAc SA acoustic guitar . This guitar is also able to send signals to the Roland GR -30 guitar synthesiser. This allows me to play different instrument sounds at the same time as the ' acoustic sound ' .i.e.: I can play straight chords on the guitar and have them mixed with a subtle organ sound in the background , therefore giving the impression of two or three instruments
playing when in fact it's only one ! There is no ' playback ' , for every sound there is a physical
movement .It's what keyboard players have been doing to you for years ; I just apply this to the guitar.
I have to be technically proficient to play this instrument - it's not for the underpracticed !
I split my acoustic signal into a TC stereo chorus - and another clean acoustic sound through the pa.The guitar sounds very 3d.

The drum sounds come from an Alesis SR-16 drum machine I call ' Everett ' , because
' whatever it does , I made it do it ' !
So , in this ever increasingly high -tech age , where technology is so hard to keep up with .
My hope is that this explanation ' de - mystifies ' the medium of sound I use ."
